"Great Hotel"
I stayed for 4 nights in the Hotel Berlin and can't recommend the hotel highly enough. I booked the hotel thorugh a well known travel website and got a single room for £26 per night. What a bargain this proved to be.
Firstly, the location of the hotel is excellant. The U-Bahn and S-Bahn station, Berliner Tor, is located approximately 100 metres from the hotel. The U-Bahn line U1 runs through Berliner Tor and this line runs to Central Station, Monckebergstrasse (the main shopping street) Rathaus Square as well as down to the harbour front. However if you don't fancy the Underground, it's only about a 15 minute walk to Central station from the hotel.
The S-Bahn line S1also runs through Berliner Tor and this line can be used to get to the airport (with the aid of a connecting bus) as well as out to Blankenese.
The hotel itself was clean with my room being cleaned every day. The staff were all very friendly and spoke good English. The single room I had was of a reasonable size although it only had a shower and no bath.
Although the hotel is situated on quite a busy road I had no problem with any noise in my room. I also felt safe walking back to the hotel from the station in the early hours of the morning
As for the breakfast, it was terrific with something for everyone - a choice of juice, various cereals, fruit, yogurt, a selection of cold meats, cheese, scrambled egg, sausages, bacon and various breads as well as coffee or tea.
I didn't try the restaurant in the hotel so I can't comment on it but the hotel does have a pleasant bar.
If I'm ever back in Hamburg I certainly would like to stay in the Hotel Berlin again

"Fantastic hotel, very reasonable"
My partner and I stayed for 3 nights at this hotel last year (March 06), and I think it was an excellent choice. As another reviewer has said, the location is great as Berliner Tor U-Bahn is only one stop away from the centre of town, or you can walk quite easily to Moenckeberg Str and Hauptbahnhof. If you need anything that the hotel can't provide or just fancy some snacks, there is a Wal-Mart just outside Berliner Tor station.
As for the hotel itself, we were a bit unsure at first sight, as it doesn't look quite as shiny and new as in the promotional pictures! There's also a rather strange 'bottle garden' outside, with plastic bottles in a row covering some lights! However, don't be put off by this, as once inside, the hotel was lovely. Our room was small, but clean and perfectly functional. It was decorated in a very modern way, and the minibar was slightly oddly placed in the middle of the wall on a pole! The lobby is large and airy, and the bar staff seemed very friendly and eager to offer drinks. However the best thing about this hotel, and perhaps the one thing that inspired me to write a review(!) is the AMAZING breakfast! Everthing you could possibly imagine or want for breakfast is offered, including a large selection of cold meats, cheeses, breads, preserves, hot food and cereals. Even smoked salmon which I haven't found offered in many other hotels! The dining room itself was lovely, and there weren't many other people staying when we were there, so it was great to have such a quiet and peaceful breakfast. All in all, I would thoroughly recommend this hotel for a stay in Hamburg, and we got it at a very reasonable rate.
